Subject:An interesting response to the SONA
Time:01:04 pm
I got it from this site: http://www.marocharim.com/2009/07/28/state-of-delusion-an-open-letter-to-president-gloria-macapagal-arroyo/

State of Delusion: An Open Letter to President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo

Madam President,

I do not hesitate to call you 1cMadam 1d not on the basis of respect or cordial greeting, but on the basis of its traditions.  You are indeed a Madam: political royalty, among other things, an elite, a political butterfly masquerading as a figurehead of political unity.  I write this letter in the interest of providing you with the State of the Nation, as experienced by a 24-year-old who happens not to be sheltered by delusional people in your circle, or trapped by the delusions of power.  As a citizen, I am entitled to describe the state of my nation, but am not as privileged as you are to deliver it before a lectern in the Batasang Pambansa.

Towards your vision of a great country, towards First World status in 20 years, you have pledged reform after reform, bill after bill, project after project, that claim to improve the lives of the Filipino people.  Yet the streets are filled with the hungry and the unemployed who have suffered the brunt of a financial crisis far worse than you can possibly imagine.  The farms are fallowed and dry, thanks to an agrarian reform program that only works to serve the interests of landlords, not tenant farmers.  The nets cast to the seas remain empty as the boats reach the shore, for as you focus on the imagined enemies of your Administration, our environment is in a shambles.  Your laudable commitment to link all the island groups of the Philippines to a nautical highway is great and all, but the absence of national industries to take goods and products through this highway will leave it an extremely open road.

A commitment to a national industry, Madam President.  While you attempt to paint a glossy picture of our country being a wonderland of outsourcing, you never looked at the other side of the portrait.  The absence of a national industry forces us to become the back-office of the world, working not for our benefit as a people and as a nation.  We need a purposeful commitment to things like science and technology to improve the lives of our citizenry; and to art, literature, and music to highlight our culture and our humanity.

As you travel the world shaking hands with the world 19s leaders, the Filipino travels in a chaotic transport system.  As you pride yourself on teaching, the young Filipino not only struggles to fit inside a crowded classroom, but also reads textbooks that are inadequate and grammatically incorrect.  As you pride yourself on the invitation of another President, you cannot invite yourself to the scrutiny of the public who demand your side of the story.  As you talk about drugs, you have refused to take a stand against drugs without approved therapeutic claims, and the specter of drug use still remains an ominous shade in back-alleys and even open markets.

Your Administration may have had 365 days to do it this year, and that is a very limited time.  The past 8 years, though, is an extended grace period that we will no longer tolerate.

This year, the Government made the grievous mistake of threatening the survival, sovereignty, and unity of the Philippines thanks to the Bangsamoro Juridical Entity 13 Memorandum of Agreement.  This year, thousands of Filipinos lost their jobs in shoe factories, in chain restaurants, in BPO facilities, tire factories, small cottage industries.  Things like corruption, scandal, accountability, and transparency, were not addressed in the SONA.  The state of the environment 13 the degradation of the Sierra Madre, Diwalwal, the Cordillera, the seas and oceans and rivers 13 were name-dropped in your SONA.  The very unity to exhort us to do is the very unity you compromised and destroyed.

The disgust and revulsion that threatened our Constitution in the form of HR 1109 was not discussed, not in passing and never even mentioned, in the SONA.  Your blatant disrespect for history, the Constitution, and the laws of the land were things you swept under the rug.  Political killings, the silencing of dissent 26 these are things not at all addressed in the SONA in favor of signing passages for treaties not useful (or irrelevant) to us, name-dropping, acknowledgments, and self-aggrandizing behavior that borders on the tasteless, and certainly crosses the border into shameless.  Your critics call it dictatorship.  You call it determination.  Madam President, I call it like I see it: a sham.

The state of the nation is exactly that, Madam President: a sham.  A nation plagued by the scandals of its own Government.  A nation mired in the miasma of neglect and selfish interests.  A nation framed in the struggles of poor families, the unemployed, the children who starve, those who have given up  and surrendered their rights because the Government offers no hope and no way out of the impasse of corruption it has created for itself to stay in power.  Power is far more important to you than principles of fairness, justice, and freedom.

To you, Madam President, this advice: if you really want something done, do it sincerely, within the bounds of the just, the moral, the ideal, and the prudent.  Do it true, get it done.  Don 19t keep switching a foot.  Respect the true.  And don 19t distort the truth  in the face of the public.

As you crunch out the numbers to validate your claims, those who are not cocooned in corporate privilege or government privilege do not feel, nor do they benefit, from the changes and reforms you brag about.  They remain poor, starving, lacking in education, denied, cheated, hoodwinked, betrayed by the very Administration that is willing to sacrifice the needs of the many for want of personal glory.

As your staunchest supporters spew forth paraphrases of Goebbels and Castro, know this: history is not the future, nor does it await legacies.  History is a judge of the here-and-the-now, and will judge you on what you do today.  You do not dare put yourself on the same pedestal as a Bonifacio, or on the same plane as Cory Aquino, if not for your audacity and desire to cling to power.

It had an inclination which basically made an opening for the insides. Plus something like this is almost fried na. Although performance still is workable, I'm afraid maybe it wouldn't be worth it to invest in high ram/hard disk space. :(

I would like to apologize in advance. I'm going to steal a few pictures of you doing what closely resembles PDA (holding hands, snuggling, kissing, etc :P) But rest assured (hopefully) you guys wont be identified/identifiable. This is for our project which is about PDA and stuff. And your picture would really contribute to the aesthetics of our presentation :D (pogi/maganda/cute naman kayo diba? :P *wink wink*)

Subject:When you can't trace His hand, trust His heart
Time:01:37 pm
It's been a while since I've been to church. It feels good to be back. I've been gone for so long due to school activities that I was getting worried about my complacency becoming a habit. It feels good to just thank God for all the things He has done in my life, small victories, as well as the big ones. :)

Awhile ago, the topic was about Habakkuk. I got down at least the "honest faith" part, where one can be truly honest before God. But I guess I was struck most by the last line of the chorus of the song "Trust His Heart." And I thought to myself "Onga naman..." If you can't understand what He has in store for you, at least trust that He has the best intentions for you, in the long run, and on a greater scale. :)

God is too wise to be mistaken
God is too good to be unkind
So when you don't understand
When you don't see His plan
When you can't trace His hand
Trust His heart

Subject:I Wanna Go Fast
Time:10:11 am
Something was off with my driving today. I could say I'm a better driver now, since I don't get paranoid over every little thing on the road. But I noticed today that I was speeding. I was a bit reckless. I overtook lanes whenever I can. It was as if I was always in a rush.

I guess I'm just enjoying the thrill of going fast. Parang ang sarap magdrive tuloy, lalo na pag mabilis. Lalo narin pag ok ung mga kasama mo sa kotse.

------------------------

Today was disappointing day. I thought I'd at least get some semblance of happiness, for small victories over Finance LT and OpMan def on the same day, but all my plans/ back-up plans/ pahabol failed ._. In the end, I hang around Chu's house where I met a new friend, Milan (dahling!) who makes really yummy yema :D

I didn't go to the maca prom coz I don't like loud music + booze + blinding lights + smokes + physically exhausted. Makes me think of the superficiality of man. >.< Good thing I had time to kill. Good thing too traffic was bad at Divisoria, so that I didn't have to arrive home "early."

Now I'm quite melancholic. hay... tomorrow, back to school nanaman. :c back to life and reality.

Hello, I am back and have read through your emails and accept that despite missing a leg, that drawing of a spider may indeed be the one I sent you. I realise with hindsight that it is possible you rejected the drawing of a spider due to this obvious limb ommission but did not point it out in an effort to avoid hurting my feelings. As such, I am sending you a revised drawing with the correct number of legs as full payment for any amount outstanding. I trust this will bring the matter to a conclusion.

We're asians. Sociologists have found out that we tend to be more close-knit than the Westerners. And being asian means we follow a general set of norms. Among of which is talking back to parents.

Agreeably, it is an effective norm to preserve the authority and power of the parent. However, it also limits communication, as the child is limited to saying "opo, hindi po, ayaw po." What does this mean? Does it mean that thee side of the child isn't valid? Or that it isn't important enough? Or given the nature of the child, his arguments/line of reasoning is flawed, as he doesn't see the big picture?

I am annoyed. -.-

I mean, probably when the kid says "But I just want to", it merits an authoritative hand. But when someone actually starts giving valid points, and demands real answers, i think this norm kills the idea-sharing.

Then again, here comes the dilema. How exactly do you explicitly convey your side of the story without acting disrespectful? After all, the mere reasoning out can and is often seen as a sign of disrespect. To an extreme, even the thought of the reasoning is already seen as disrespectful.

Someone said, "do it in love." This statement, while ideal, lacks practicality. Wherever you see it, even if you pattern in such as "ma, alam mo mahal kita, pero kasi alam mo paminsan ang labo mo at nakakapikon ka rin eh", it always has a hint of disrespect. Objectively, it could pass, if phrased better. But since we're asians, we have this tendency already innate in us to view or discern such statements as disrespectful.

Plus, they're like the The Dark Knight goons - escalation. They say one thing, and then when that certain complaint is addressed, they move on to the next one. For example:

They get angry about the time. It's 11pm and they want you to sleep early. But you say that 11pm is still within the bounds of early (and it is, coz they were ranting about staying up till 1/2/3/4am). Then they say, they just want you to stop playing the computer for hours (3/4 hours) But you say, you just watched a movie, and only played for less than an hour. They say its not about the time, its your priorities. You say you only played very little on weekdays, sometimes hardly at all, and only really play during weekends. Then they say, you should stop playing computer because it doesn't contribute anything to you, etc... see where I'm going?

at the start, they wanted you to stop playing the computer coz its getting late. At the end, they end up reasoning that computers don't add value to you anyhow. I'm annoyed at the deception. If only they'd gotten straight to the point, I would've known that they sincerely wanted me to stop playing the computer coz it doesn't add value to me as a person. But taking this path just shows that they don't want you to have the last say. They want the last say in everything. They want to be right. Always.

Subject:What will you do with one extra second?
Time:02:50 am
There will be one extra second before 2009 Jan 01 00:00:00 UTC.

On December 31, the planet's official timekeepers will add a “leap second” to the coordinated universal time scale (UTC) followed around the world. The additional second makes up for the difference in two clocks – one based on Earth’s rotation and the other on the more precise atomic time of the UTC.

Universal time is based on atomic energy, with one second defined as the length of 9,192,631,770 energy transitions of the cesium atom. Before the era of atomic time, seconds were based on the speed of Earth’s rotation – but that’s been slowing by 2 milliseconds per day per century because of tidal friction.

To keep the time scales within 0.9 seconds of each other, the International Earth Rotation Reference Systems Service, which tracks the differences between the clocks, periodically inserts or subtracts a second to Universal time. The last one was added on New Year’s Eve three years ago.

So, I just had the worst day of my life.

At around 1:30 PM today, at Valley Golf and Country Club, Antipolo City, Mayor Nasser Pangandaman, Jr., Mayor of Masiu City, Lanao del Sur, his father, Secretary Nasser Pangandaman of the Department of Agrarian Reform, and company, beat my defenseless 56-year-old dad and my 14-year-old brother to a pulp because of some stupid misunderstanding on the golf course.

This is a golf course. I have been a golfer all my life, and I have never seen anything like this. NOTHING. This is hard to comprehend. And it happened to my own father and my own brother too. Right in front of my eyes.

My brother and I were playing golf at the South Course of Valley. We were on the 3rd hole, and we see two golf carts going past us, overtaking our flight, and setting up to tee off on the next hole. My dad goes up to them and asks them why they would do that, why they would overtake us without even asking for our permission. Golf etiquette 101. One of the guys says that they're with the flight in front of us. (So what? That doesn't give them the right to just pass us WITHOUT asking.) So, we go to the 5th hole. The flight behind us catches up with us, and asks us what caused the hold up. We said that this flight just slipped in front of our flight. So we complained to the marshall. We play the 5th hole and walk towards the next hole, where there is a teehouse, and both the flights in front of us were there, talking with the marshall. The mayor of Masiu City, Lanao del Sur talks with my dad. Things get heated up. Voices were raised. But never, in my wildest dreams, did I ever imagine that someone would pull out a punch. Apparently not. He attacks my father. His flightmates, maybe 2 or 3 of them, rush to his aid and beat up my father. My 56-year-old father. My younger brother and I could not just watch. We rushed to break the fight. My younger brother pleads to the mayor to please stop it. To not hurt my dad. To just stop. His words still ring through my head..."Sorry na po, sorry na po...tama na...tama na po..." With his hands in front of his chest in a praying position. PLEADING. The mayor socks him in the face. My brother defended himself. My dad is still on the ground getting clobbered. My brother is the same way. I try to stop the fight, but all I can do is stop one person. There were 4 or 5 of them attacking now.

Someone breaks up the fight. I thought it was all over. The mayor shouts to his caddy: "Hindi nila kami kilala! Sabihin mo nga sa kanila kung sino ako!" And believe me, I had no idea who this person was. But now I know. He's the person who, with 4 other men, beat up my 56-year-old father and my 14-year-old brother. He's the person who sacks a pleading 14-year-old kid in the face. He's a person who, I am sure, is gonna rot in hell.

I lash out, but my dad held me back. I was screaming my lungs out, shouting to this mayor, telling him about what he had done. I said: "Nakakahiya kayo. Singkwenta'y sais anyos ang tatay ko. And kapatid ko kakatorse anyos. Anong ilalaban nila sayo?"

The mayor looks at my brother, point to his face, and says, "Tatandaan kita!" And he tells me that my brother has a bad attitude and that I need to watch him. WHAT THE HELL?! So, my brother's bad for defending his father?!

We leave. We walk to the clubhouse to file a complaint. My brother asks for a doctor. My dad could barely walk. Their group comes to the clubhouse, sees my brother. Once again my brother pleads, says sorry, and is crying. He was CRYING, for crissakes. But no. The relentless mayor still punches him in the face, and then sees my dad and goes after my dad again. Him and his friend pull my dad to the ground, pulls at his feet, and steps on him like he's dirt. I run to him and try to hold him back, holding him back by his shirt, while this other guy and this girl tries to stop me. She tells me to just stop it. I scream in her face "they're beating my father up and you want me to stop?!" I pull at his shirt--I don't let go. All I can see was my dad being trampled on. I didn't even see my brother getting beat up.

People pull them away. I get my dad, and I saw my brother. His right ear was bleeding. I freaked out. I told the receptionists to bring my brother to the clinic. I pull my dad away. People were separating us.

My mom and my older brother come. I tell her Bino's right ear is bleeding. They both look like they could kill. My dad holds my brother off, I hold off my mom. When I finally got my mom under control, my older brother gets away and I hold him off. Two of the mayor's bodyguards pull out guns. I embraced my brother from the back, just holding him back, crying. The receptionists came to us, crying, hugging me, my dad, and my mom, whispering to us to just leave. "Maam, umalis na po kayo, may mga baril sila...Maam...umalis na po kayo please..."

I am pretty sure the Secretary of DAR did not take part in the fight, but he just watched all this happen. He watched two of his sons, as we figured out, the other guy was his son, too, beat up my father and my 14-year-old brother. He didn't do anything to stop it. And this person is what now? A cabinet member. A politician.

Sounds like something out of a movie, doesn't it? But this is what happened. TODAY. The day after Christmas. To my family. And all I ask for is JUSTICE. The people at Valley Golf did not seem to want to help us. None of the security guards even tried to stop the fight. Right in the clubhouse. I came back after the fight was over and talked to the receptionists. They say they did not see anything. The general manager of Valley Golf would not give us the names of the men who made my brother's ear bleed. It took him an hour. Maybe even more than that. He seemed to not want to help us. Because, we were against the SECRETARY OF THE DEPARTMENT OF AGRARIAN REFORM and the MAYOR OF MASIU CITY, LANAO DEL SUR. They were all scared.

The world has gone crazy. Two politicians beat up a defenseless 56-year-old father and his 14-year-old son. At a golf course. I swear to God, I thought golfers were decent people. You would think politicians were decent people. I guess not. I guess they gang up on 56-year-old men and beat up pleading 14-year-old kids.

Please pray for my dad, my brother and for my whole family. Please pray that we get JUSTICE. Oh God, please, give these people what they deserve.

I don't even know these people, but if you read this please pray for their family too. we live in such a cruel world... =s

Subject:Tuesdays with Manong Roger
Time:08:30 am
Tonight, since Matteo is closed, i took refuge in one of the vacant CTC rooms that's still lighted to do my OpMan Paper. When it was nearing 9:45pm, the janitor came in and said he was going to clean the room now. I asked if he could start cleaning while I'm still in the room. He didn't mind it seemed.

I felt guilty to be honest, since I'm guessing he's gonna be working a little late because I was still in the room. So I offered to help out a bit ;)

I offered my help, asking for the broom while he says "Di, wag nalang." Hehe. But I was arrogant :P I love sweeping. Probably this was more enforced after my JEEP insertions as a street sweeper. But a sweeper is a sweeper regardless of place. And a little bit of a sweeper in me.

As I was sweeping the floor, he kept on saying "wag na noh, nakakahiya naman" I said naman "hindi naman kuya, anu ka ba? :P" I made a little chit-chat. His name is Manong Roger. He's been working here for 13 years now. :O I was surprised! :O But my bigger surprise was when he told me there's someone here who's working for 35/40 years already!!! *bigger emoticon than :O*

I asked why. He said naman the benefits are good. They're treated nicely compared to other jobs. One thing that bugs me though is he said na "karangalan magtrabaho at makilaho(?) sa mga katulad ninyong mayayaman" This shocked me actually. To think I was hardly contented with my life, and here he is, working for 13 years, happily contented with his job, and he considers one of his pleasures to be able to work in the vicinity of us Ateneans. :O talk about humility! :O

I asked if he has children. Sabi niya wala daw. Namatay ung bata sa tiyan ng nanay nung ipinapanganak. Ang malubha ay cesarian pa, kaya mahal. I said "gawa nalang ng bago" XD

He asked me too what year i was and if I'm also a management student. I told him yes, I was third year but i'll be delayed. He kept on telling me "wag mawalan ng tiwala sa sarili. Kasi pag nawalan ka ng tiwala sa sarili, mahirap na." (I thought to myself, higit sa sarili, magtiwala nalang sa Diyos) And also "magsipag ka lang, kakayanin mo rin yan"

It seemed he genuinely wants me to do my best in my tests. There are really so few people like him, especially in this world, who actually cares for another person genuinely. He actually seemed more "atenean" than most people I know here. I guess the school does a damn good job in imparting Ignatian values to its constituents.

After that, I pretended that my ride was here so he could resume his work. If a guard or his supervisor (don't know if they have this) sees me doing his work for him, he might get into trouble.

As I was walking to JSEC, i got a natural high, a feeling of euphoria coupled with a fresh insight. It felt good to get to know the people who daily clean the rooms, so you can have a nice place to learn and study. Often times we easily forget the people around us. We overlook the fact that life lessons are all around us if we just look.

I'm proud to have known Manong Roger. I know there's a pretty good chance I'll forget about his face, but I certainly won't forget that experience (partially due to multiply XD)

If you're reading this, I challenge you to talk to the people around you that you often overlook. Talk to your drivers, maids, workers, janitors, xerox ladies (Ate Alma doesn't count :P). You'd be surprised at some of the things you'll hear. It won't always be like my experience. But what counts is that it'll be a different experience. :)

To Manong Roger...
